Marrakech is an assault on the senses: the bustle of Jemaa el-Fna square, labyrinthine souks, the cool courtyards of riads and the pink glow of its walls at sunset. It's the perfect base for an escape to the desert, the Atlas mountains and final relaxation on the coast of Essaouira. This guide brings together the practical essentials, with a real family itinerary at the end.

Best time to visit

The best seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November): warm days and pleasant nights. Summer (June–August) is very hot (40°C), though riads with pools and the Essaouira coast make it bearable. Winter is mild by day but cold at night, especially in the desert (can drop to 5–10°C), so bring a warm layer if you're doing the Sahara excursion.

Getting around Marrakech

The medina is best explored on foot, and it makes sense: cars can't enter many alleyways and riads typically send someone to pick you up at the entrance because it's easy to get lost. For the airport and longer trips, a private transfer avoids haggling with taxis. If you're travelling the country (desert, Essaouira), a guide-driver or organized tour is comfortable; driving independently is possible but urban traffic is chaotic.

From desert to coast

The star excursion is the Sahara: 3 days through the High Atlas, the kasbah of Aït Ben Haddou (Unesco World Heritage) and a night in a tent in the dunes of Merzouga, with a camel ride at sunset. By contrast, Essaouira—2.5 hours by road—offers Atlantic breeze, ramparts, fresh fish and a much calmer pace, ideal to round off the trip.

Eating in Marrakech

Tagine (lamb with prunes, chicken with preserved lemon) and Friday couscous are essential. Dine at least one night at the Jemaa el-Fna stalls (ask for mint tea and accept the fixed price without haggling) and book a cooking class to take the recipes home. Water, always bottled—even for brushing your teeth.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do I need in Marrakech?
2–3 days is enough for the city. If you add the desert excursion (3 days) and a couple of nights in Essaouira, a week is the ideal format.
Is it safe to travel to Marrakech as a family?
Yes, it's a regular family destination. Use common sense in the souks (keep young children by the hand), drink bottled water and settle prices before any service. Always check the official country sheet from your Ministry of Foreign Affairs before travelling.
Do I need a visa?
For tourist stays of up to 90 days, Spanish passports and most EU and LATAM countries don't need a visa, but the passport must have a minimum validity period (usually 6 months). Check your official country sheet before you go.
Better hotel or hotel-riad?
The riad (traditional house with courtyard) is the authentic experience within the medina, steps from the souks. Modern hotels are in the new city (Gueliz/Hivernage), quieter but less atmospheric.
