Orlando: travel guide
Orlando guide: how many days, how to combine Walt Disney World and Universal, which tickets to buy, where to stay and budget. Flights, airport transfer
Orlando is the world's theme park capital: Walt Disney World brings together four massive parks (Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom) and Universal Orlando adds two more—with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter—plus the new Epic Universe. It's a destination to take your time with: distances are large, it's worth renting a car or arranging transfers, and each park deserves at least a full day. This guide clarifies how many days you need, how to combine Disney and Universal, and which ticket to buy, with a realistic itinerary at the end.
Best time to visit
The best times are late January through April and September through November: bearable heat, less rain, and lower crowds than summer. Avoid June through August (humid heat, daily thunderstorms, and peak vacation season) and major US holidays (Spring Break, Thanksgiving, Christmas), when parks fill up and prices spike. September and early October are typically among the quietest months of the year.

The four parks of Walt Disney World
Walt Disney World isn't one park, it's four. Magic Kingdom is the classic with Cinderella's castle and the most family-friendly attractions; EPCOT combines innovation with the World Showcase pavilions by country; Hollywood Studios concentrates the most spectacular experiences (Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge and Toy Story Land); and Animal Kingdom blends safari with the world of Pandora (Avatar). Each park deserves a full day. Base admission is one park per day; with Park Hopper you can hop between parks on the same day.
Universal Orlando, Epic Universe, and beyond the parks
Universal Orlando has two established parks (Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure, with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter split between them) and in 2025 opened Epic Universe, a third park that has sparked major interest in the city. The Express Pass skips lines at many attractions. If you want to venture beyond the theme park bubble, Kennedy Space Center is just over an hour toward the coast and is one of the best day trips from Orlando.
How many days and how to combine Disney + Universal
For Walt Disney World, plan one day per park: 4 days if you want to see them all, 2-3 for a first visit. Universal requires 2 days for its two (or three) parks. Combining both resorts on the same trip is the norm, but it adds up quickly: a comfortable complete visit is 7-10 days. If you have less time, prioritize Magic Kingdom and EPCOT at Disney and one day at Universal. Always arrive at opening and use the official apps (Disney and Universal) for reservations and wait times.
How to get around and where to stay
Orlando is huge and the parks are separated by miles, so either rent a car or arrange transfers and use the resorts' internal transportation. Staying in a Disney hotel offers free transport to its parks and early park entry; staying on-site at Universal's premium hotels includes free Express Pass (a huge savings). Outside the resorts, the International Drive and Lake Buena Vista areas have more affordable hotels well-positioned between both complexes.
Estimated budget
Budget hotel (on-site or I-Drive) per night, family room | 130-220 € |
Disney 1-day ticket per person, varies by park and date | 110-180 € |
Universal 1-day ticket per person, varies by date | 100-170 € |
Car rental per day, mid-size category | 35-60 € |
A week in Orlando for a family of four, combining Disney and Universal with hotel, tickets, and car, runs roughly 3,500-5,500 € without flights. Buying multi-day tickets in advance significantly reduces the daily cost per park.

Frequently asked questions
- How many days do I need for Orlando?
- For a first visit, 7-10 days is comfortable, combining Disney (3-4 parks) and Universal (2 days). With less time, prioritize Magic Kingdom and EPCOT at Disney and one full day at Universal.
- Disney or Universal? Can I do both?
- Most people do both on the same trip. Disney is more extensive and family-friendly (four parks); Universal is more intense on roller coasters and has the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the new Epic Universe. If your group has young children, Disney tips the scales; with teenagers, Universal wins points.
- Do I need to rent a car?
- Highly recommended: the parks are far apart and distant from the airport. If you're staying within a Disney resort and don't plan to leave, their free transportation may suffice, but to move freely between Disney, Universal, and day trips, a car is worth it.
- What's the best time to avoid crowds and heat?
- Late January through April and September through November. September and early October are typically among the quietest months. Avoid summer (humid heat and thunderstorms) and major US holidays.
